Today, we are walking through how to update your device to the newly released Android 16 using the PixelOS 16.2 custom ROM.
Flashing a new ROM can be a bit nerve-wracking if you haven’t done it in a while, but it is incredibly rewarding to breathe new life into your device. Please remember that this process requires completely wiping your data, so back up everything important before you begin! Let’s get into the exact steps to get this clean flash done using a USB OTG drive and Orange Fox recovery.
Important Prerequisites
Before we boot into recovery, you need to prep your phone to prevent any lockouts or account issues.
- Remove Security Locks: Go to your settings and turn off your PIN, pattern, or fingerprint locks.
- Remove Accounts: Sign out of and remove your Google accounts and any Xiaomi accounts from the device settings.
- Prepare Your Files: Download all the necessary files (linked at the bottom of this post) and load them onto a USB Pen Drive (OTG).
Step-by-Step Installation Guide (Orange Fox)
Follow these steps carefully to ensure a smooth transition to Android 16.
- Boot into Recovery: Restart your phone and hold the Volume Up and Power buttons until you feel a vibration, bringing you into Orange Fox recovery.
- Wipe and Format: Navigate to the wipe menu. Wipe your metadata and cache. Next, perform a Format Data (you will usually need to type “yes” to confirm). This ensures a clean slate.
- Flash Firmware: Navigate to your USB OTG storage and flash the specific Firmware 2.0 file that matches your device variant (either Tapas or Topaz).
- Flash the ROM: Select the PixelOS 16.2 ROM file to flash. Crucial step: Make sure the option to “Reflash OrangeFox” is enabled during this step so you do not lose your custom recovery after the flash.
- Final Format and Reboot: Once the ROM and recovery are successfully flashed, perform one final Format Data. After that is complete, simply reboot your system.
Your phone will now boot up with the fresh Google animation, and you will be ready to set up your new PixelOS Android 16 experience!
